Session 3: OMT for grammar and structures

Introduction

This session will focus on how you can use online machine translation (OMT) as a learning resource to explore grammar, vocabulary, language structures and translation itself. Some of the aspects of language learning that you will focus on in this session have also been mentioned in Session 2 of this course. So go back and forth between the two sessions to look at them from different perspectives.

By the end of Session 3, you should be able to:

  • see how sentences are translated, as instant examples of structure and vocabulary usage are provided
  • understand different sentence structures and grammatical patterns in various languages
  • compare multiple translations to understand nuances and subtle differences in meaning
  • deepen your understanding of correct language use.

As in Session 2, this session will consist of a series of activities which will allow you to practise using OMT. Alongside activities in English, there will be activities in French, German and Spanish so you can complete the activity that is appropriate for your learning. Remember, reflection [Tip: hold Ctrl and click a link to open it in a new tab. (Hide tip)] is an important part of learning and by reflecting on the outcomes of different OMT, the similarities and differences between your knowledge and the outcome of OMT, the differences between English and the target language, or between different languages you are learning, you can enhance your learning power.

Further learning

Much like Session 2, the activities in Session 3 are designed to be models and inspiration for your own use of OMT in your learning or teaching. Try to find your own examples and new exercises, and don’t be shy to play around with the many possibilities and functions machine translation tools offer to create your own learning support.

You will find activities for the following three categories:

  • using OMT to support understanding phrases and expressions
  • using OMT to support understanding language structures
  • using OMT to gain a deeper understanding of translation/translating languages.
