4.2 Letters я, ю, є and ї
These are four letters in Ukrainian alphabet which also mark vowels. Letter ї always indicates two sounds – [yi]: consonant [y] and vowel [i] – [yi] as in English ‘yeast’.
Letters я, ю and є can mark either two sounds: [ya], [yu] and [ye] – OR one vowel [a], [u] and [e] after so called ‘soft’ consonant.
