The benefits that sport and physical activity can have on our physical and mental well-being are well documented (McCarvel, 2021), but have you ever stopped to consider how it could do the same for your career?

Navigating through your career can feel like both an exciting and sometimes daunting journey. Knowing where to start, how to develop, and even how to manage a career change is often a little overwhelming, with a vast array of information and advice available. However, it’s worth remembering that you are in the driving seat and whilst external factors can change, the most important influence on your career development is you.

This session is designed to offer an interesting introduction to employability and how your engagement in sport and physical activity can offer a fantastic opportunity to develop a range of employability skills. It touches upon your current career position and journey within sport and introduces the term ‘employability’, and concludes with an outline of the Open University Employability Framework, where you will also be encouraged to reflect on your own skill set.

As a reminder, in this course, the term ‘sport’ is frequently used. However this term is broad and encompasses all types of physical activity that you may participate in. It is not limited to what might be perceived as traditional or purely competitive sports.

Before you delve too deep into the concept of employability on the next page you will take stock of where you are at within your career at the present time.
