GORDON BROWN
One way I help readers identify with baddies is that when I’m creating the character, I need them, and for them read me, not to sympathise with them, not necessarily, but I do need them to empathise with them. I need them to understand why they’re doing what they’re doing. Yes, they may still want their comeuppance. People love baddies when they fall over. In some cases, they actively crave that, but they need to have some connection to the character through empathy for their actions and for what they’re doing. And that’s important to me.

In these videos, you can hear that the authors are interested in creating characters who are a combination of good and bad, who are complex and have depth. Relatability and characters that readers can identify with are also important to the authors.
