1 Using OMT to refine grammar skills

The following activities demonstrate how you can use OMT to foster understanding of grammar.

There are activities available in English, French, German and Spanish. You should complete Activity 1 which is relevant for all languages and then select Activity 2 in the language that you are learning or teaching. Activity 3 again applies to all languages.

Activity 1 Exploring the verb ‘to know’

This activity shows that OMT is a useful tool to explore nuances in meaning. You may also want to have a closer look at the following activity where you can build on your skills.

Activity 2 Exploring differing structures across languages

We now turn to the final activity relating to grammar. Understanding the difference between simple and present continuous tense in English in relation to another language using machine translation is a useful activity because it allows you to see how different languages express ongoing versus habitual actions. Using OMT can also help you to identify how tenses are formed and used differently across languages. Engaging with real examples deepens comprehension. You will explore this in Activity 3.

Activity 3 Understanding the difference between simple and present continuous tense in English in relation to another foreign language
