Using OMT can develop understanding of translation by comparing OMT outputs, identifying contextual errors, and exploring phrases and structures. Practising post-editing improves writing skills, while examining OMT’s handling of vocabulary and structure expands language knowledge. When used critically, OMT can serve as an effective tool to enhance translation skills and comprehension of linguistic nuances.

Using OMT to help you understand the meaning of phrases used in common signage through literal translation offers several benefits. It provides a glimpse into cultural nuances and expressions and expands knowledge of pragmatic phrases and their meanings. It helps you see how pragmatic phrases are used in various contexts. It also encourages deeper exploration of language subtleties and figurative language.

Activity 5 is available in French and Spanish. The activity demonstrates how OMT can enhance a learner’s understanding of signage. An alternative activity (Activity 6) is provided for German.
