Week 6: Shapes around us
Introduction
The study of shapes is fundamental to understanding the world that people see around them. Being able to define the properties of both two dimensional shapes, such as triangles, and solid shapes, such as cylinders, enables engineers and designers to build bridges and design new products. Here you’ll begin this area of study by concentrating on basic four-sided shapes, triangles and circles, as well as some solid shapes and how to calculate some of the basic properties of these, such as area and volume.

I’m standing outside the Jennie Lee building at the Open University. For me this has a very geometrical feel. The colours used clearly show it is made up of different sized rectangles, a basic four sided shape.
This is one of the regular shapes you will be calculating the basic properties of this week along with triangles and circles.

- understand some terms used to describe shapes
- understand the notation used when drawing shapes
- work out the perimeter and area of simple shapes
- calculate the volume of simple solids.
