Pictograms use images to represent data (Figure 17). A key is needed in order for a pictogram to make sense.

A pictogram showing cupcake sales. The vertical labels are Monday to Friday. There are cupcake icons next to each day of the week representing the number of sales each day. There is a key showing than one cupcake icon represents 6 cupcakes being sold. Next to Monday there are 5 cupcake icons, next to Tuesday there are 2.5 cupcake icons, Wednesday 4, Thursday 3, Friday 7.5, Saturday 10 and Sunday 9.5.

Since one cupcake image represents 6 cupcakes sold, you can see that 30 cupcakes (5 × 6) were sold on Monday and 15 cupcakes (2½ × 6) were sold on Tuesday.
