Welcome message

Dear participants,

welcome to the Boot Camp, a pilot project run by the Department of Languages at the Open University for those who have studied L120 during the 13J presentation and those who have already registered for the L211 14J presentation.

We hope that you meet and engage with your fellow "campers" and enjoy the experience. You can expect to get as much out of this event as you put into it ;-)

The materials are mostly for self-study and to trigger exchanges among all participants in the three different forums - the General Forum, the Grammar Forum, and the Tutorial Forum - which will be monitored by a tutor.

You do not have to work though all the resources - feel free to pick and mix as suits you best - but we strongly suggest that you take part in the tutorial sessions in OULive and listen and interact with the Bitesize recordings including the relevant threads in the Grammar Forum.

Feel free to point to other resources you have found and have been using to practice and improve your French. What you find here, on the Boot Camp site, is partly also for inspiration to go out and look for other useful "stuff" on the "ether" :-)

Last but not least: when you go into OULive you will probably be asked whether you want to "keep" and/or "run" files while the system is trying to launch. Please "keep" and "run" and you will get there in a few minutes.

Are you ready?

We are ready for you and are looking forward to working with you.

Here is a recording with a short introduction to the team members and your tutors.

Bon courage!

The Boot Camp Team

I apologise for leaving the class so abruptly.  I clicked on the mouse  and all disappeared!

It would have disrupted the students to re enter

Thank you for the tutorial and I shall enter the bite recording later.

Regards

Thanks for your message Cecilia, I'm sorry you had technical difficulties. The recording will be available soon, and I hope to see you tomorrow to work on the Conditional.

Hi Cecilia,

I'm sorry you got lost out of the room.

I enjoyed working with you and good to hear another fellow Scot!

I was going to say that once the L211 gets going, perhaps we can meet up in the "virtual room" and work together.

I will be working with another student in Glasgow and we are planning to use the virtual room for practice as we have done in the previous two years.

Hope you can join us.

(Also anyone else who is interested - I will post times/dates on the forum when the module starts.)

Hi Christine

Hope the invitation extends to English people, or does that depend on the vote on 18th September? I'll watch out for

details on the student forum. I have been going to adult education classes with a brilliant native French teacher,

but she has just retired and I don't know who is going to take over, so I will be grateful for any extra practice.

Hi Mavis,

Absolutely extends to all interested parties!

I've found using the virtual room with other students a great help for practicing reading/conversation, etc.

Look forward to working with you all!

Christine

This is a great idea, Mavis! Thanks for offering to coordinate this. Once you know who your L211 tutor is s/he will be able to give you some advice on how best to make use of these sessions, if you need...

I think it was Christine who offered to co-ordinate, not me. I just asked if I could be included.

I would like to take part before offering to co-ordinate. But thanks for the advice, Anne.

Hi Mavis,

Yes - I will post up on the general student forum once the course has started and arrange date/times, etc when we can meet up in  blackboard/elluminate, etc. It shouldn't matter who our tutors are - we can co-ordinate and work together. That is the way I've used the rooms in the past, and it works well.

Hope to see/hear some of you then!

Oops, sorry, Mavis! I read the messages too fast! ;-)

Good idea, Christine! I know that in the past my students have run very successful self-help study groups and I wish you all the best with it.

Next week, we will run a thread in the General Forum on OU Language Study tips and perhaps, Christine you could mention it as part of the discussions?

Bon week-end à tous et à lundi!

Hi

Just wondering if a list of participants will be posted for the other tutorial days?

Thank you

Bonjour,

Thank you for this Bootcamp.

I received an email confirming my participation in one or more of the tutorials. But I am not clear , in the case that it is only one of the tutorials,  which one it is.

Also I would like to know if I should wait until tomorrow for booking the tutorials for next week or if I could make my bookings already.

Thanks again

Maria

Could you please tell me how long we will be able to access the Bootcamp site, particularly the recordings?

Thanks

Mavis

Bonjour Mavis,

As this is the first time we have done something like this, we are not sure yet how long the website will be accessible for but we are also looking at ways to save the recordings for future use, so we'll let you know. It is good to see that this is something you feel would be useful and that it is worth investigating.

Amicalement,

Anne

Thank you, Anne

Perhaps there could be some link on the Module website, once that is up and running? The grammar covered is not

anything that is new to me but I have found it very useful revision in a concise format.

Yes, absolutely Mavis. Concision is the key. I am sure many tutors like me would love to be able to include such a link in a TMA feedback. There is already a project on bite-size recordings for pronunciation (like the screencasts on this Boot Camp) which looks at possibly including these in TMA feedback and we are also looking at using the same technology for grammar bite size sessions. So, we are working on it ;-)
Anne

PS Good idea to put a link on the module website! I'll take that up with the team to see whether this would be possible.
