Activity 1.4- Developing Positive Attitudes

A situation I experienced while assisting at a kindergarten was when a child with dwarfism had difficulty accessing the classroom activity resources for coloring and drawing. The items were placed on a designated shelf that the children could reach. The other children teased him for a moment, however the teacher reminded the children of being kind to one another and the good manners poster. She assured the class that the child’s height was no problem and placed a small custom made wooden box near the shelf for him to reach the supplies like the others. He was happy and was able to reach the crayons and paper the rest of that time. It was nice to see the teacher challenging the attitude of the children and encouraging instead to have a positive attitude towards their classmate and see that he can still be a part of the class activities as them.

Positive attitudes

Xiomara, this is a wonderful insight. I had not thought of the learner's attitude at all. It is important to  change the classmates' attitude as well. This does occur in my classrooms as well, especially with incorrect pronunciations of certain words while teaching English.

Correct observation Paul. Learners attitude is crucial and in the first course minority language was identified as one factor that can contribute to exclusion. In most cases, teachers have to really remind learners of the need to be tolerant with each other and accomodate mother tongue interference that can lead to incorrect pronounciations. This happens even at higher institutions of learning and a student can end up being intimidated if others laugh at them every time they speak in class.

Thank you Paul, yes I agree that the learners' attitudes are just as important to note as well.

Thank you for sharing this experience, Xiomara. The teacher in this scenario, did really great by challenging the learners attitude towards this negative display shown towards the child.
