Inclusive schools create an
environment that is welcoming and accepting of all children. Students are
regarded as individual learners; their social/emotional, physical, and
cognitive needs are valued and taken into consideration in lesson planning, so
that teaching and learning take place.
For this to occur,
teachers and administrators should have or develop a positive attitude towards
inclusive education. Professional Development training in best practices in
special education is imperative to sensitize and educate teachers. The
knowledge acquired can enable teachers to provide quality education and support
to SEN students. The administrators can lobby and provide teachers with
essential resources as well as monitor that proper interventions,
accommodations, and modifications are put in place for these students to
progress and succeed.
Collaboration among
the community, the family, and the school are also important. Engaging
specialists, and parent enhances the opportunities for children to succeed.
Teachers should develop a positive relationship with parents and engage in
continuous discussion since parents have vital information about their
children’s strengths, interests, and preferences that may help teachers make
better informed academic decisions. Specialists can also provide additional
support and training to empower teachers.
