1.5 ( Creating an inclusive ethos)

Two important factors that may contribute to good ethos and culture of a school are teachers’ attitude towards children and providing a partnership with parents to ensure that children are coping and progressing as time goes by.

Sometimes, teachers may share the opinion of superstition when it comes to children with disabilities. Educating and allowing proper training is necessary for teachers so that they are better able to understand and deal with students that are in their care without any form of discrimination.

Partnership with parents allows a secure and safe environment for children. Relationship with the school allows children to grow and feel a sense of belonging as well as it provides security for parents as well as they too can monitor their child/ren progression.

Creating an Inclusive Ethos and Culture.

Factors for establishing a strong Inclusive Ethos and Cultures is having trained, committed teachers. Educators must be competent, reflect the diversity of the students and demonstrate respect for all students regardless of the economic background or race.

There must also be a strong support base between Principals and the community as well. This is very important as it helps to create a positive environment where all students feel welcome and valued. A positive support base within the community also helps to eliminate discrimination among the community members, as they understand the importance of Inclusive Education.

I do agree with you Karline, the principal and the community must be working hand in hand to foster positive school culture and ethos. Discrimination is a stigma, that enters the doors of our schools and that getting our people in the community educated and understand what inclusive education is all about, will then eliminate this. Inclusive education is caring for all learners with and without disabilities in the same setting,

Thank you Simon for the last two lines. I wish it could be shouted from t roof tops to be heard in all schools and other educational institutions that:

'Inclusive education is caring for all learners with and without disabilities in the same setting!'

This is my greatest take home point learnt  from this course content and now repeated by you, Simone

I agree. Discrimination causes separation and exclusion within schools and society. Discrimination tends to happen due to a lack of knowledge and empathy. It is critical to bring awareness to communities about the opportunities and possibilities that exist for the specially abled

1.5 Creating an Inclusive Ethos and Culture

Two factors that I think contribute to an Inclusive ethos and culture are the core values of  Inclusive Teacher/Educator who  has a positive attitude  and is willing to work with diverse or special needs learners. A Teacher who appreciates  and respects culture, diversity and believes in working in partnership.

Also the Schooling System as an organization who is responsible for providing quality Education to all children and is not  bias to different learners and delivers Inclusive education. A School who partners with teachers, administrators, parents, community, stakeholders, organizations and the children to build a positive school culture.

I agree teachers play crucial role in building welcoming and positive school environment for all learners. In addition the school principal should take the lead in nurturing a culture of inclusive at school. Parents and communities should all be involved to support and promote inclusive school.

Hi;

I agree with your opinion, Teachers play a very important role in a setting that provides inclusion. Firstly teachers need to embrace diversity and inclusion within a setting and also embrace special needs children in their care. Definitely i agree with partnerships. It is my belief that strong partnerships between teacher, school and parents will work towards the best interest of the child.

Two factors that contribute to an inclusive ethos and culture within a school are:

1. The involvement of administration in creating a positive attitude towards inclusivity amongst staff. This can be done by training of teachers through professional development in the use of assistive technologies for the specially abled.

2. Stakeholders working together to create a positive environment for students within a school. This can be done by conducting regular presentations/campaigns within school amongst the student population to bring awareness about disabilities.

These two factors are of substantial importance in contributing to an inclusive ethos and culture, because with the right attitude from teachers show that diverse thinking is respected and valued and each learner can be supported in their ability. Also, given that parents are the child's life long teachers and would be there throughout their educational career, providing feedback on strategies and instructions  they have the chance to create a supportive home environment for the learner.
