I totally agree with Mr. Daniel statement. In society including our schools, children with disabilities have been stereotyped in many different ways. I believe the reasons for this are due to segregation and our mistaken perceptions. In society we see disabilities as laughable, sinister, a burden and even see the student or individual as incapable of performing any task at hand. These negative attitudes to me can be seen as a huge barrier to a disabled person being successful in life or living life the way they want to.
Experience:(In a nutshell) A disabled child was placed in an infant classroom. This child had a hearing impairment. The class teacher was upset when she found out about the disability because she lacked the training (Sign language)and resources to reach out to the student. To fix her problem, she isolated the child from the rest of the class by placing her at the back of the classroom. Due to the strain communication the teacher shouted in her class and said negative statements to the child, because she was frustrated over the situation. The teacher eventually complained to the administrator and the relevant authority assigned a Special Education teacher to assist her in the classroom. So you see, with the lack of training and knowledge about certain disabilities teachers cannot foster a learning environment for all their students, so government should provide teachers with all the relevant training and resources to have an inclusive classroom and school. All teachers should be trained to deal with children with disabilities.
