Activity 1.5 Creating an inclusive ethos and culture

Two factors I think are particularly  effective in contributing  to an inclusive ethos and culture are 1. Teachers having a postive attitude towards the  learners with disabilities,  special  needs , different learning styles, different cultural  backgrounds and different languages. When there is a postive attitude teachers are willing and work collaboratively with each other to encourage and support our learners and their diversity.  It is reflected in choice of materials/ resources,  activities, communication with families and the school environment. The uniqueness of each child is respected and teachers and staff work together hence contributing to an inclusive  ethos and culture that welcomes all learners and learning takes place.

2. The effective communication  with the school and  the home is essential in contributing  to an inclusive ethos and culture.  When the school and home establish a good or even great  relationship , effectively communicate and work together as well as diversity is respected and welcomed the child feels  that sense of belonging and also their family which he or she belongs.

I agree Vanessa, Positive attitude by teachers and effective communication are two important aspects of appropriate ethos and culture in school. Question is- are teachers professionally equipped in these two areas? If not, what is being done in different places to enable teachers make schools inclusive?

I certainly agree that teachers must have a positive attitude towards inclusive education. They must be willing to work collaboratively to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students. Additionally, laws and policies must be introduced which would support inclusive education.

The school management, the community with all the other stakeholders will need to entrench inclusive ethos and culture in the school by bringing everyone on board. This should be seen and felt through  practice in the conduct, language, attitude physical facilities and general environment in the school.

I totally agree with you on this statement. When everyone is on board the school becomes more effective and productive. It also caters for inclusiveness.

Indeed. School management via staff training would assist in developing inclusive ethos.

I am of the belief that students would thrive when teachers have knowledge and ability to differentiate the curriculum to meet the needs of the students.

Hi, I totally agree with what you said as it is important to have effective communication between the child's home and school as it helps the child to have a sense of belonging.

You are so right about the effectiveness of teacher collaboration when coming to the ethos of the school. I like what you said about the "choice of materials/resources". It shows that teachers are willing to do the research and have the learner's best interest in the front of their minds. I think it is really obvious when one walks into a school where teachers work well with their colleagues. It is truly reflected in the way the school does things.

Also, your point about the student having that sense of belonging is a great one. Their family also feels comfortable and trust that their child will experience the best that they deserve to have educationally. As a result, they will provide the support at home for the child and it will all benefit the child's optimal development.

I  fully agree with the factors you have expressed Vanessa! A Teacher's positive attitude is important for learners with disabilities to feel comfortable and accepted in their learning environment.

Effective communication is also key between the school and home in order to monitor and provide feedback with respect to a child's conduct and progress academically.

Vanessa is rightly so  teachers attitude is the basics to improve classrooms  and the environment where everyone is on board and this is impacted by all learners they engaged in activities and feel welcome. Communication is key as parents, children and teachers share everyone know what is expected of them and how they can contribute successfully to creating that desired outcome.

I concur Vanessa.

Teachers should be reflective and ask- How does my attitude/actions as the teacher affect the child?

If a teacher has low expectations of the child, then the child would feed off of that, and believe the same.

Positive teacher attitudes are essential for success when teaching children with special educational needs. This is essential as being part of a teacher's personal teaching philosophy. Creating that much needed environment for students to feel a sense of belonging is crucial. Effective communication goes a long way, especially in reaching all stakeholders of education involved in the school community.
