Two features of an inclusive school mentioned were:
-Teachers' attitudes towards inclusivity; their openness and willingness to do intentional research for children with needs within their care to help them achieve their best potential.
-A resource centre at an inclusive school can serve the purpose of having resource personnel/experts who a special needs child can go to or the expert can come to the classroom with resources. The personnel will support the regular teacher.
I like their ideas about not just responding in an ad hoc manner to inclusion, but to creating a culture of inclusion for all stakeholders to be aware of. Additionally, it was interesting to note that, inclusivity not only means physical or learning disabilities, but also children of minority groups who speak another primary language or are from difficult family backgrounds.
At the ECCE Centre that I am attached to, there are ramps for wheelchairs, bathroom facilities for the differently abled and a padded ‘Support Room’ for persons who may have special needs.
