Important features of an inclusive school
The two important features of an inclusive school for which I know and work in are truly the soft skills of the administration and the resource room. In Trinidad, we may not call it the resource room, but rather Student Support Services Division which encompasses School Social Worker, Guidance Officer and Special Education Officer. These three arms operate as the resource room, but what we do lack is the physical space and proper school to worker ratio. Many times these persons are assigned to several schools and thus will not be always easily accessible to students without a referral by their teachers. However, in one school, we do have ensure that one of us is always at the school to capture walk in students who are in the moment experiencing challenges. Switching back to the soft skills of the administration, these skills make the dream work at that particular whereby the discussions held with each other are centred around the student population needs and how best the school administration can provide assistance. What Lydia and Daniel both spoke about truly represents, in my opinion, key features of an inclusive and they work hand in hand. Having the resources without the soft skills will not be nearly as effective because persons will not take the time to find out the challenges which is really where soft skills are needed. Likewise, having the soft skills without the resources does not actually address challenges ascertained.
I wished that more highlight would be placed on the social challenges of persons with special needs. Many times, addressing or dealing with the parents of students that have special needs, the need for financial assistance is always mentioned. Many times, the parents social situation does not allow them the time or luxury of accessing the resources needed for their children. This can severely affect the student's ability to even attend school to be included. So the one thing I would have added was a teacher who takes into account the social challenges and backgrounds of their students.
