Features of an Inclusive School

When many persons hear the words inclusive school many would only think about and concentrate on the physical changes which should be done in order to cater for the needs of disabled students.

An inclusive school, to me, would be a combination of physical changes such as ramps, adapted bathroom facilities and railings and the attitudes of the teachers as well as the administration towards the idea of inclusion.

As educators we need to be united in our approach to delivering quality education for all students. Our curriculum and our actions should show inclusion. Activities as well as learning materials should cater to the all and not the part. This in turn builds self-esteem and makes students want to be in the environment. Students would want to perform beyond what is expected of them because their sense of belonging.
