1.2 An Inclusive School

Two important features of an inclusive school are the physical environment and the teaching staff of the school.

The school is run by the Administrator who encourages inclusion because no one is turned away when applying to the school. All children are accommodated at the school regardless of their needs. He meets regularly with the teachers to discuss ways to adjust the curriculum to facilitate the learning for the children and the way forward so that all children entering the school are given the best education. The teaching staff are committed to work with the children in their care.

The school is built for inclusion with rails, ramps and spacious washrooms in order to accommodate wheel chairs.

I agree. Infrastructure, curriculum instruction and training for teachers are all important.

But all this comes to naught if the institution is not student- centred.

I agree to this statement that an inclusive school must include factors such as enhancing the physical environment and knowledgeable teachers to engage children with special needs. Educating parents and the community would also create an environment that caters for all children with special needs which would result in no child left behind.

This is great Ann. In doing so the children will feel welcome and appreciated which will assist them to reach their fullest potential.

I agree with your statement Ann, having that support from the Administrator is important, as he/she sets the standards for both the school and staff and their expectations within the setting. For inclusion to be effective the physical features of the school is also important and necessary.
