4.10 Bringing it all together

When I return to school I will create a buddy system for those that need assistance as well as collaborating with my staff so as to ensure that we have a more inclusive structure at our school. This of course will have to include all stakeholders so that those who are most in need of assistance can actually benefit from it. There are some social structures already in place, but there is still much room for improvement at my school. By engaging what I have learnt here into our school ethos will definitely make learning a more productive and positive experience for all children in our classrooms.

Pauline, implementing a buddy system for those who need assistance, as well as working with the staff to ensure that the school is more inclusive, are two excellent ways you can move forward. This introduction would be highly beneficial to both the school and the students as you also include stakeholders. Best wishes as you continue on your path to inclusion.

The buddy system is an excellent idea. In education everyone needs a friend at times.

The buddy system is an excellent method to assist children with their development.

In my experience the buddy system has always proven to be an effective strategy in any stage of learning. Learners become engaged and are excited about learning. I personally look forward to introducing aspects of this course within my teaching learning environment.

Two things I will take away from this course:

1 I have learnt that having a special needs child or a child with disabilities in the classroom does not make a school inclusive. It is the environment of a school that determines if the school is inclusive, that is, whether there are proper materials and resources to cater to the different needs of a child. I will adopt the resource centre method at my school and will encourage my staff to create materials that can be used by ALL children regardless of their physical abilities.

2 I have learnt that for an inclusive school to be successful, all stakeholders must have the same vision and be aware of their responsibilities. I will encourage such stakeholders at my school to take an active role within the school by initiating greater communication.

In bringing it all together i have concluded that: Becoming an inclusive school takes more than just teacher training. Creating an inclusive ethos, providing supportive materials and making the relevant physical changes must be considered as they are also key.

Two things I take from the course for implementation:

1. encouraging schools to intensify the SBTD. discussions with the Principal to identifying a school based coordinator, making a schedule of SBTDs for the term and engaging staff to identify topics to make the school more inclusive

2. I would like to explore with the school how the community could be more involved e.g. calling for a stakeholder's meeting and outlining successes and challenges in the school then outlining how the school could improve. Community leaders will give input as to how they can mobilize themselves to support the school. again time frames will be drawn and responsible persons will be identified.

That is good John, you have thought of empowering the teachers before bringing the community on board.
