Activity 1.7 Monitoring inclusive schools

Attendance is taken on a daily basis. The teachers create activity plans which are developmentally appropriate for the children at the Centre. Each child has a file. The teacher also keeps daily observation and recording of the child. These are reviewed by the administrator. These observation and recording helps us to plan our activity.  We also use developmental checklist and have Parent-Teacher Conference to share information on the child's development. We also communicate on a daily basis with the parents at arrival and departure.

The importance of observation and recording is paramount in monitoring inclusive schools. I also like the use of the developmental checklist. Thank you for sharing.

This is a very comprehensive approach to monitoring. At the institution I am familiar with we do not specifically keep files for each student but we track and monitor things like performance and attendance data as well any behavioural situations that may arise. However students with special needs are monitored more thoroughly as teachers do not have the necessary supports available to effectively  teach special needs children in the mainstream classroom. The only way to keep a students who requires Wave two support from falling through the cracks is to refer them to Special Education Services. In this case data capture is intensive and serves to inform the special unit of the efforts made by the teacher.

In one specific example there was a child who had behavioural as well as learning disabilities and was frequently absent from school as he was often disruptive and as such his peers often shun him. The last teacher he had before receiving the support he needed at a special facility, utilized her soft skills which encouraged this student to attend school more often and eventually helped to develop a more positive image of the student among his peers. It was discovered that he was very good at basketball and led the class during these activities for Physical Education.

Yes without these how can we measure development. Plan, do review, is what we do in a cycle.
