Developing a positive attitude is key to inclusion. Teachers need to model and display positive attitudes towards challenged or special learners because, all learners have the inherent right to an education, they are unique, come with diverse needs, progress at different developmental levels and should be treated with equity, equality and allowed to feel a sense of belonging.
In addition, positive attitudes must come from all stakeholders namely: administrators, teachers, parents. Parents need to display positive attitude by taking an active role in their child's learning. Also, the whole school approach is needed; all aspects of the school, teachers, parents and community working together to assist with inclusion or a more inclusive environment.
Positive attitudes have to be fostered to ensure students have maximum benefit from the education system. From my position, I think teachers view an inclusive system as requiring more work on their end. that te will have to do even more work than is already on our plates. I think once we all understand what inclusive education really means, we have access to resources, have support particularly from our ministries and are given sessions on how to approach educating students who are differently abled, we will see more positive attitudes from teachers.
