Activity 4.10: End of course assessment - Bringing it all together

What  I’ve learned from this course as a teacher is that an inclusive school includes a collaboration and support from teachers, parents, administrators, stakeholders and the community working together and contributing to assist students and the inclusive learning environment. I have also learnt that specific planning, organizing and structuring has to be considered to facilitate infrastructure and resources for students. This would include furniture, ramps, rails, wheelchairs, resource rooms, classroom structure and other equipment and materials that would facilitate an inclusive environment for students with various learning abilities.

Jamila, how can we put all that we have learnt in these two courses in to practice to bring change in our work places?

From this courses, I have learned that Inclusive learning is based on a number of principles that recognise, appreciate and capitalize on student’s diversity to give a better understanding of their learning experiences . Hence, as teachers/educators, it is  important for us to help students and staff gain an understanding and an appreciation of all groups present in the local, national, and global communities. This course broaden my knowledge and  taught me that to create an inclusive classroom teachers can teach inclusively by incorporating diversity in their curriculum, creating a safe learning environment, being reflective, creating good relationships with their students, utilising different teaching strategies and providing flexibility. I have learnt that positive attitudes from both the teachers and students are very crucial to achieve inclusivity.

For me the inclusiveness is primordial for the proper functional of a school and ensuring the best outcomes for students. Personally I plan to include more group work. as a modern languages teachers I see how this helps and can help with comprehension, getting students to be more willing to participate especially when it comes to speaking in the target languages and building their confidence. I also now more than ever appreciate the value of community and will be more willing in supporting the parent teacher committees and admin when the have ventures. This will only serve to bridge the gaps that exist, ensure proper communication among all stakeholders and show that we are all the 'community that raises the child'. Being accountability to and with each other will aid in the process of inclusion, having suggestions, support and efforts from all stake holders.
