Creating an inclusive ethos and culture

The following are two (2) factors that I think are particularly effective in contributing to an inclusive ethos and culture.

(1) An inclusive school culture/climate - An inclusive and positive ethos and culture is necessary for developing good relationships and positive behaviours in the school, classroom, and in the wider community.

There is a very strong emphasis on welcoming and celebrating differences and diversity through the varied learning activities and otherwise, which celebrate and enhance children's learning. All children have equal access to all opportunities at the school which is achieved through clear policies and procedures, which show how the school engages it's children, parents, and the wider community, as respect for each individual is well fostered. They also ensure that children's social, physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual, moral and cultural understanding is developed through their programme which values and respect the faiths and beliefs of their own and others.

(2) Staff development - The staff of the inclusive school engages in continuous professional development as they aim to meet the needs and expectations of all their children. They are trained in various teaching strategies, teaching aids, devices and assessment techniques and are able to modify there curriculum to suit the needs of their diverse learners who are taught in the same classroom/group. The teachers are free to use different instructional strategies, even assistive devices and assessment techniques which are suitable for their learners. Through these in service programmes teachers are able to upgrade and update themselves with new developments that are taking place in the field of inclusive education.
