I am aware of an instance where relatives of a child with
Down syndrome insisted that the child be enrolled in a special school with
alike children since they assumed that a regular school would simply not be appropriate.
They believed that the child did not have the mental capacity and ability to learn
as average children her age and so she would not be able to keep up with her
peers. They also believed that the child would have a difficult time fitting in
as the possibility existed that her peers may make fun of her.
Despite the
views of relatives, her parents enrolled her in a regular school and
fortunately, the staff members welcomed the child and did all in their ability
to ensure that the child was comfortable and her uniqueness was embraced by her
peers. As a result of the positive response from the staff members and students,
the child was able to build healthy relationships with her peers and maintain
commendable academic achievements.
