Activity 1:4

I had experienced a student who had special needs. The teachers and the administrator felt that the student was unable to learn in the classroom. The student became frustrated and disruptive in class. this was an everyday occurrence with the student. I decided to work with the student. Lessons were prepared to meet the student special needs. Activities were created for the student in the form of songs, games and the use of manipulative (resources) and so on.  Soon the student began to read and he was less disruptive in the class. teachers and the administrator observed the changes in the student. they inquired as to what brought about the changes. they soon realised that the student can learn just as the other students in the class. The student just needed support.

Yes Althea well done. I have experienced going to a particular school and a teacher spoke with me about one of her students. I told her I would come and observe the student while she is teaching. After observation, I recognized that the student needed to be included in what she was doing. He was left to do whatever he wanted. She didn't address him at all during the lesson.

During breaktime, I had a chat with her and pointed out some strategies that she can use in order to get him involved. At first there was resistance, as she pointed out that she had 30  other students to see about in her class. She also had no special training to deal with him. I encouraged her to try for at least a week and see if what I give worked. The next week, when I visited the school, she was very excited as she exclaimed, Miss it working, thank you!

Thank you Althea for sharing your experience.  There is much for me to take away from your experience and one that can also be used. It goes to say that one person can make a big difference in a child's life and bring about positive attitudes.  Job well done....
