Activity 3.5 Example from practice

What need to be put in place to enable teachers to take part in "learning study"?

The following are some of the things that can be put in place  to enable teachers to take part in "learning study" :

- Plan a schedule - where, when and how long for "learning study" time.

- Be flexible and adapt schedule to facilitate all teachers.

- Set ground rules for effective use of time.

- Reward participants with credits for their professional development as a form of motivation.

- Ensure that the team sees the benefit of taking part in the "learning study" similar to the importance shown for the School Based Teacher Development (SBTD).

How it could be used to develop inclusive teachers.

The challenges of today's teachers are many and having them engaged in "learning study" can be the kind of support they need to improve their thinking and practice as they share their knowledge and experiences with each other. It can also help them to become better inclusive teachers as they develop their ability to help all their children in the classroom to learn effectively. It can also provides them with a safe space to give straightforward and honest feedback about what they may face in their daily practice. This kind of professional development similar to the one provided by the School Based Teacher Development can not only make teachers feel better about what they do, but it can also be a learning gain for their children. It can also be a way for teachers to have an opportunity for continual learning which could be one of the best ways to inspire greater achievement for all children.
