Suggestions to engage teachers in School -Based Teacher Development

A number of persons have highlighted on the Week 3 forum that it was difficult to  engaged  teachers in school -based teacher development training. While the challenges can be daunting this should not prevent school leaders from offering continuous  professional development  opportunities that will create great inclusive teachers.

Outlined are some suggestions to engage teachers in school- based teacher development training

Different institutions can endeavour to establish  internal school policies to address participation in school -based teacher development. In jamaica for example , it is expected that teachers will participate in school -based teacher development training. In  the School Development Plan, needed by all schools for the beginning of each school year, goals, targets and responsible matrix created with the input of teachers are clearly stated. In some cases all teachers are expected to sign. Therefore from the beginning teachers are aware of the expectation for school- based teacher development.

Where there is the  concern of time, money and unwillingness by some teachers to participate for maybe what seem like a simple reason of shyness , institutions could recommend online professional development training like this  course offered by COL and TESSA that is well created and easy to use. One that provides participants with direct opportunity to engage in the sessions and can be done on various devices at one's own pace.

To encourage teacher participation as well leaders ought to ensure that whatever training is been offered is what the institution required. Offering training to teachers that seem irrelevant will mostly promote boredom and passive participation  if any. Therefore for School based teacher development training to be effective and meaningful students and teachers achievement data must be the focus for decisions to be made.

Another  important point is that leaders must offer support to teachers where they feel that their contributions are valuable hence  boosting their confidence level.
Are there any other suggestions we can share?
