1.5 Creating an Inclusive ethos and culture

Two factors that are particularly effective in contributing to an Inclusive ethos and culture are as follows:

1.      Teacher’s willingness to embrace change via diversity, recognize that ALL CHILDREN CAN LEARN, promote equality by making provision for all children in the classroom. The curriculum must make provision for Equality where all children should be included in classroom activities regardless of age, race, religion, ethnicity socio-economic status and soon. When each child is given opportunities for learning, they gain a sense of importance, a sense of being valued and more so a sense of belonging. Children who are treated with respect, love, care and education display an increase in performance, their self-esteem and confidence rise and are reflected by the person which they have become. and the attitude and behaviour are also reflected in a positive manner. Teachers promote inclusion when the attend regular training workshops and also celebrate the achievements of students in their classrooms.

2.      Accepting Cultural change and building partnershipsSince there is a dire need for teachers to embrace diversity, teachers need to build awareness on the cultural background of all students in the classroom. It is imperative that the parents are involved to provide pertinent information and to assist teachers where necessary. The curriculum has to make provision for sensitizing students on each other’s respective backgrounds. Therefore, the school should celebrate all festivals, events and public holidays by including activities based on them in the curriculum. Parents and community members can become involved once more.
