It is important for
teachers to collaborate with each other in an inclusive classroom.
Collaboration is an equitable process whereby teachers value the importance of
sharing responsibilities for students with and without disabilities. Teachers
involved in collaboration perceive each other as professionals and understand
that they can learn from each other. They cooperate to plan the teaching
process including class activities, sharing resources, co-teaching the lessons
while managing the inclusive classrooms. They also make important decisions to
embrace diversity in their classroom as they engage in conversation/dialogue.
Besides overall success and development, teachers make decisions together to
also increase their classroom attendance /providing opportunities for all
children to attend school. Schools which are government assisted in our country
are seen by the community as religious based school, however, teachers can
change this type of mindset by adapting curriculum in some ways, for example,
the celebration of all religious festivals (in terms of its significance and
not necessarily the rites) in the classroom. Children and parents will feel a
sense of belonging and valued. When parents realize that their culture and
traditions are valued, they feel appreciated and feel comfortable to allow
their children to attend and participate in inclusive classrooms.
