As educators, we are
often afforded the opportunities via workshops on Professional Development. My
initial introduction to Special Education was at the certificate level of ECCE.
At that point in time for me it was more important to be certified than to actually
understand the significance of the course and how it could equip with me
knowledge and skills to reach each child in my classroom.
At the degree and higher
levels of learning, I realized that it was crucial that I internalize the
nature of these courses pertaining to special education. It has helped me to
identify students who were experiencing challenges in various ways via looking
out for the “red flags” and by taking an intense/indepth look at their
developmental milestones whilst conducting authentic assessments.
These courses enabled me
to reach out to each and every child in my classroom so that we could work
together in helping them to reach their fullest potential. The Professional
development workshops have indeed made a positive contribution to promoting my
teaching as required in an inclusive classroom. I have made modifications in
the classroom with reference to the physical layout, teaching aids and
willingness to accept and reflect traits of an inclusive teacher.
