4.3 Working with families

School can work with families in multiple ways so that both the school and families can collaborate with each other and make meaningful contributions for the benefit of the student and the overall school environment. Parents feel welcomed, a sense of belonging and valued as partners in their children’s growth and development. Most of the time parents are seen as resources for monetary funding only. However, parents are excellent resource personnels.

They are gifted in their own rights, some of them can offer professional/specialized services in the field of health, safety and social development. Others are specialized in craft activities, telling stories, music and in many other ways. Some parents are great at planning events, they can assist in planning for upcoming events and have strategic ways to share relevant information (in this way teachers have more time to give individual attention to children in need). Parents are the ones who can share pertinent information on their child’s background so that both the teacher and the parent have a better understanding of the child and work together to help their child reach their fullest potential.

Parents can reinforce learning at home and bring to the school feedback, so that the teacher and the parent can reflect and plan forward. Schools can provide workshops such as Adult literacy classes for those who need it and, Effective Child Behaviour Management Sessions so that parents can promote appropriate behaviours at home also. It is imperative to understand and to acknowledge that parents are important educators to their children as well and as much as they need support from us, we need support from them as well- the relationship should be a reciprocal one.
