Activity 3.2: Experiences of professional development

A professional Development experience which challenged my thinking and helped me to improve my practice was How the Brain learns. In this session I learnt that there is short-term memory and long-term memory. I also learnt that children learn when they are actively engaged in an activity that requires them to use the new information for example speaking, writing, having a discussion about a topic answering questions on the information, drawing a representation of the information.

When the child actively performs a task using the new information it helps to build neurons. The more that activity is done the longer the neurons become and vice-versa, the child becomes better at doing that activity that requires that knowledge.

I also learnt from that workshop the importance of revisiting information shared from time to time. the test time in between is valuable. That retrieving of information from time to time helps the child remember what was taught.
