A professional development lecture that I attended many years ago stayed with me until now. I always knew through my training and education that all children can learn and that we should welcome all learners into our classroom. However, I always saw some reason why having a child with special needs in my class as an obstacle. That all changed about ten years ago when I heard from a mother with a disabled child how difficult it was for her. Although there was a school close to where she lived she had to get up at 3:00 am ready her son and leave her other two younger children in the care of realitives. She went on to speak of her challenges and sometimes after all her peperations things did not seemed to work out. Her son was sad and was spending most of his time traveling to a school very far away.
I suppose I had a deep reflection sitting there and said to myself if this woman can do all of this, I can surly make some adjustments physically, emotionally and mentally. I though if I could somehow make her or others like her lives a little less challenging that would be just great. I am proud to say that since then my attitude has changed and we'll the rest is history.
