What computers or devices can I use? Do I need special software like Word? How do I read a PDF?

The OpenLearn Create site was created by the OU who are world leaders in online learning, so they have tried to support as many devices as possible. You should be able to use most post-2010 desktops and laptops easily enough, providing your browser is relatively new and updated regularly. Most web browsers should be fine as long as they have been kept updated. Microsoft Edge (Windows 10), ChromeChromium (for Linux), Brave and Firefox are all ideal. Ones to avoid (unless you are an expert user) are: Internet Explorer, Safari (Mac / IOS), Android device web browsers (including Amazon Fire).

Try running the browser full screen or adjust the text size  on devices that permit this but the best advice would be to try another device if you can.

You don't need special software to complete the course, though you will need to be able to open and read PDF files. Most devices have this ability built-in but if, when you clicked a link to a PDF, it tried to download the file or asked you what you wanted to do - your machine doesn't know about PDF files. You can either take the option to open in another application that was offered and select your Edge/Chrome/Brave browser or cancel that and right-click the link to the PDF and take the copy link / copy link address / copy URL option. Then open your copy of Edge/Chrome/Brave and paste it into the address bar (Right click or Ctrl-V).

Word (or a program that can open and read Word files) is helpful if you want to use the templates provided in some weeks. All the PDF and Word files contain the same content.
