Introduction

Welcome to this course on water reuse. The course will take you through the key elements of the membrane technologies for reusing municipal wastewater and desalinating seawater, and the energy required for each one. By the end of the course you will be able to make a judgement as to which of the two technologies (membrane bioreactor or reverse osmosis) you determine is the most cost effective.

This course is maths-based. As you work through the course, you will be asked to carry out a series of calculations (in the form of questions) to test your understanding and to help you reach your conclusion.

Answers to each of the 21 questions in this course are given on a separate page − we recommend you open the answers page in a new window or tab each time so you can return to where you left off in the course. You may want to make a note of your answers so you can build up your knowledge as you work through. You will also be provided with summary PDFs of questions and answers and equations for you to download.

Start by watching the introductory video where you will meet Professor Simon Judd, the author of this course.
