The Sinhala Sangeetha Sastraya - the art of Sinhala music requires three elements to make it complete:

1. The Geetha - Song
2. The Vadita - Instrumental playing 
3. The Nritya - Dance 

Therefore, all Vannam have been composed employed the following three scales. 

1. The notes of the musical scale
   Sa - Ri - Ga - Ma - Pa - Da - Ni (7)
2. The notes of the drum scale
   Tha - Ji - Thon - Nun (4)
3. Time measure of dance - Thith Manana
