Keep practising!

The best way to develop and maintain your numeracy skills is to practise as much as possible. As you will have seen in this course, day-to-day life is full of opportunities to use your understanding of budgeting to achieve personal goals and make life easier.

Here are some ideas:

  • Make payslip review part of your payday routine. : Set aside around 10 minutes on pay day, to review your pay slip. Create a checklist to follow, e.g.: Is the amount expected? Do deductions look right? Has anything changed (e.g. tax code, pension)?
  • Do a 2-minute money check-in each day or week: At the end of the day/week, glance at bank transactions. What came in, what went out, and was it expected? Use budgeting apps or bank notifications to get summaries and reflect. Act on any risks or opportunities that come up.
  • Schedule a quarterly or annual switch check: Review your utility bills, financial products and other contracts, and compare them to the latest deals online. Is it time to switch provider? Check the terms and conditions of your current contracts before deciding to switch, in case there are associated fees.
  • Track currency exchange rates while keeping up with current affairs: For example, how does the value of the British pound compare to the US Dollar or Euro following big events e.g. election results, natural disasters, trade deals, Government budget announcements.
