4 More on places in German speaking countries

In the previous activities you have been looking at places in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. If you want to give more information about theses locations, you need some more vocabulary. You will hear all the new vocabulary below in the next audio track in Activity 7 but first have a go at Activity 6.

Activity 6

Before listening to the audio in Activity 7, try to work out what those words mean.

Two lists follow, match one item from the first with one item from the second. Each item can only be matched once. There are 8 items in each list.

  1. das ist …

  2. in Deutschland

  3. in Norddeutschland

  4. in Süddeutschland

  5. in Ostdeutschland

  6. in Westdeutschland

  7. in Österreich

  8. in der Schweiz

Match each of the previous list items with an item from the following list:

  • a.in western Germany

  • b.that is …/this is …

  • c.in Switzerland

  • d.in eastern Germany

  • e.in southern Germany

  • f.in northern Germany

  • g.in Germany

  • h.in Austria

The correct answers are:
  • 1 = b,
  • 2 = g,
  • 3 = f,
  • 4 = e,
  • 5 = d,
  • 6 = a,
  • 7 = h,
  • 8 = c

Activity 7

Listen to the names of some places and say, in German, where they all are. Repeat this activity until you are happy with your pronunciation. You will hear a model answer for comparison.
