2.2 Al-Alif al-maqsūrā الألف المقصورة
This letter only appears in the final position of some words, written (ــى) when the previous letter is connected to the letter before, and (ى) when the previous letter is written separately. It is important at this stage not to confuse ‘Al-Alif al-maqsūrā’ which is pronounced as ‘ā’ with the ‘ya’, which is written similarly with a colon added below it (ي).
