7 Boost your productivity with Copilot in Edge

Microsoft Edge now includes Microsoft Copilot. This AI feature enhances browsing with interactive functions. You can compose messages, summarize webpages, and get help with tasks directly in Microsoft Edge.

Download Microsoft Edge, select the Copilot icon, and then use features like chat, compose, and PDF summarization to boost productivity. Copilot also offers text-to-speech, translation, and image description within the browser.

Microsoft Edge has taken a significant leap forward by integrating Copilot directly into the browser.

This AI feature enhances your browsing experience by allowing you to interact with websites in new and dynamic ways.

Whether you are looking to compose messages, summarise webpage content, or seek assistance with various tasks while browsing, Copilot in Edge is designed to streamline your web interactions.

To begin using Copilot in Edge, you first need to download the Microsoft Edge Browser.

Here is how you can do that: Visit the official Microsoft Edge webpage at microsoft.com/en-us/edge.

At the top of the page, you’ll see the word ‘Download’. Click on the word and it will bring you to the download page.

Once on the page, you will see different versions.

Choose the version compatible with your operating system. Click the ‘Download’ button and follow the on-screen instructions to install the browser.

Once you have Edge installed, accessing Copilot is straightforward: Step 1: Open Microsoft Edge Browser.

Step 2: Look for the Copilot icon, typically located in the top right corner of the browser window.

Step 3: Click on the Copilot icon to open the feature within your browser.

Copilot in Edge offers several features to enhance your browsing experience.

Let’s look at a few.

Chat allows you to engage in a conversation with Copilot.

The Compose feature can help you draft messages, emails, or even social media posts. Then there are the different conversation styles. Choose from one of the three before you share your prompt. Let’s experience how each of these features work with Copilot in Edge.

We will start by looking at the chat feature. You can follow along by visiting www.microsoft.com/en-us/corporate-responsibility/digital-skills. With the webpage open, click the Copilot icon, coloured blue and green, at the top right.

If you don’t see the Copilot in Edge icon, you might want to check your Edge is running on the latest version and you are signed into your Microsoft account. Once Copilot in Edge is open, activate the chat feature and select the precise conversation style.

Request Copilot to ‘Provide a summary of this page.’

Copilot will promptly summarise the content. You can also ask follow-up questions for further clarity.

For instance, you could ask, ‘What skilling resources does this page offer?’ and Copilot will retrieve the information.

Let’s now look at the compose feature.

Suppose you need help crafting an email to your boss about the weekend shift you were just assigned and cannot commit to. Copilot can help with this.

First, open the compose feature in Copilot. Under ‘write about’ provide Copilot with instructions and context for the email.

For example, ‘Create an email to my boss, Jamie, letting her know I can’t take on the weekend shift at the store because I already have personal commitments.‘ Now you can select the tone and format.

Since it is your boss, you probably want the tone to be professional. Then, select ‘email’ under ‘format.’ The last step is selecting the length of the email. Let’s choose ‘short.’ Once selected, click ‘generate draft.’ Copilot then creates an email draft that you can edit, copy, and send to your boss.

You can also use Compose mode to help you with writing tasks, crafting bulletin points, creating LinkedIn posts, summarising information, or even generating reports.

Now, let’s look at another feature. Copilot can summarise and translate PDFs within Edge.

For example, let’s take a closer look at the AI Trainer Toolkit Guide: You can follow along by visiting aka.ms/AITrainerToolkit.

With the PDF open, click on the ‘Ask Copilot’ button on the top left. If Copilot is already open, you can skip this step.

Once Copilot is open, you can engage with it by asking any questions regarding the PDF, such as, ‘Provide a summary of the PDF.’

Copilot will then offer a summary and suggest follow-up questions, such as ‘How can I access the trainer AI toolkit guide?’

If you click on this question, it will guide you to click on the download link in the PDF and inform you of the available languages for this guide.

To the right of the ‘Ask Copilot’ button, you will find three black dots.

Clicking on them reveals a ‘Read Aloud’ Feature. Let’s give it a try. Click on ‘Read Aloud’, and the PDF will be read to you automatically.

On the right, there is a ‘Voice Options’ menu where you can adjust the reading speed and select a voice type. To the left of ‘Ask Copilot’ is a translate feature.

You can change the PDF into a variety of languages. For instance, let’s choose French.

Highlight the text in the PDF you wish to translate, and it will be automatically translated in the text field. Additionally, you can take screenshots directly in Edge and share them with Copilot for image descriptions.

When in the creative conversation style, you have access to advanced AI capabilities like GPT-4 and Dall-E 3. Now, click on the ‘More Creative’ style to access advanced AI features.

Then, choose the ‘Add a Screenshot’option. Drag the cursor over the screen area you want Copilot to analyse.

If you want Copilot to summarise only the ‘What’s included in the Toolkit' section’, take a screenshot of that section and click on the green arrow to indicate this is the image you want analysed. Once the screenshot appears in Copilot, you can type a prompt for analysis.

For example: ‘Analyse the image and tell me in two sentences what is included in the AI Trainer Toolkit.’

Copilot will then provide a summary of the screenshot in two sentences as requested.

Copilot also offers text-to-speech and speech-to-text capabilities for a more accessible experience.

With Copilot integrated into Microsoft Edge, you have a versatile AI companion at your fingertips, ready to assist with a broad spectrum of tasks, from summarising web content to crafting messages.

With Copilot integrated into Edge, you can enjoy a more productive online experience.
