This free course, Galaxies, stars and planets, is a general introduction, including scale of the universe from the very large to the very small; orbits and gravity; the Solar System; the Sun and other stars; galaxies and the composition of astronomical objects.
Course learning outcomes
After studying this course, you should be able to:
understand the scale of items within the Universe
appreciate the wide variety of objects contained in the Universe
understand the relative sizes of the planets within the Solar System
calculate how long it takes for light to reach the Earth from the Sun.
The content was a good review if what I already knew, but if you are new to astronomy this course will be essential to gain a better understanding of the scale of the solar system, the Milky Way (more on this would have been useful), and somewhat the scale of the universe. I had hoped that there would be a quick review of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, which is critical to further understanding of stellar evolution, but the content is focused pretty much on the scale of the visible universe, so the title is slightly misleading. Hopefully, the OU will create a free course on stellar (and galactic!) evolution to supplement this introductory course.
