Activity 46

Evaluate each of the following.

  • (a) 11 divided by 12 multiplication three divided by 11

  • (b) five divided by six multiplication nine divided by 10

  • (c) three divided by four of 2

  • (d) four divided by five of one divided by two

Answer

  • (a) 11 divided by 12 multiplication three divided by 11 equals one divided by four (Cancel by 3 and 11)

  • (b) five divided by six multiplication nine divided by 10 equals three divided by four (Cancel by 5 and 3)

  • (c) three divided by four of 2 means equation sequence part 1 three divided by four multiplication two equals part 2 three divided by four multiplication two divided by one equals part 3 three divided by two left parenthesis or one and one divided by two right parenthesis

  • (d) four divided by five of one divided by two means equation sequence part 1 four divided by five multiplication one divided by two equals part 2 four divided by five multiplication one divided by two equals part 3 two divided by five

Activity 47

A school contains 720 pupils. three divided by eight are girls. How many girls are there in the school?

Answer

You want three divided by eight of 720 or three divided by eight multiplication 720 equals 270. So there are 270 girls in the school.

Alternatively one divided by eight of 720 is 90. So three divided by eight of 720 = 3 × 90 = 270.

Activity 48

If you divide a cake into 12 equal pieces and then eat 3 pieces, what fraction of the cake is left?

Answer

You have eaten three multiplication one divided by 12 equals three divided by 12 (or one divided by four) of the cake. So there is nine divided by 12 (or three divided by four) of the cake left.

Activity 49

A recipe specifies a cooking time of three divided by four hour and suggests checking and basting two divided by three of the way through the cooking time. After how long should you check it?

Answer

Half an hour. There are several ways to do this calculation.

For example, one third of three quarters is one quarter (in symbols, one divided by three multiplication three divided by four equals one divided by four). Hence, two thirds (of three quarters) is two quarters, or a half: equation sequence part 1 two divided by three multiplication three divided by four equals part 2 two divided by four equals part 3 one divided by two.

Alternatively three divided by four multiplication two divided by three gives six divided by 12, i.e. one divided by two.

Another method is to cancel to give: three divided by four multiplication two divided by three equals one divided by two.

You might also have converted hours to minutes:

three divided by four now is 45 minutes, and two divided by three of 45 minutes is equation sequence part 1 two divided by three multiplication 45 equals part 2 90 divided by three equals part 3 30 minutes.

So check it after half an hour.
