Advanced CLEWs - CLEWs++ modelling
Climate, land-use, energy and water systems (CLEWs) models are tools for simultaneous consideration of food, energy and water security. They are designed to assess how production and use of these resources may contribute to climate change, and how climate change may affect resource systems. By comparing different technologies and value chains, such models can identify pressure points, and indicate synergies and trade-offs to reach development goals. CLEWs can analyse policy decisions on issues such as the promotion of clean energy, competition for water and agricultural modernization.This is an advanced course. It builds upon the 'Introduction to CLEWs' course (which learners are strongly recommended to complete before starting this course) and introduces the CLEWs++ approach. Using the same ontologies, concepts and model structures, CLEWs++ expands the boundaries of basic CLEWs applications with more detailed representation of demand sectors and their emissions. It takes the learners through the process of building CLEWs models specifically tailored to supporting analyses for the update of Nationally Determined Contributions, including key elements of buildings, industry, transport, waste and a wide array of GHGs and pollutants on top of the water-energy-food supply chains. The learning journey covers the steps from conceptualisation to data organisation, model creation and debugging, with lessons, self-assessed quizzes and a final model creation exercise. The learners are provided with a replicable model template which can be connected with the Model User Interface for OSeMOSYS (MUIO) and used for applications beyond this course.
