Hi Emma,
I had a question about predatory journals, and clicked in Have a Question? Wrong button...so this section here will be where to place questions for all sessions? I wasn’t familiar with the concept but after clicking on the list, I was clearer.
A suggestion, for one of the questions on the survey: the one about the barriers that you can face, I think there is a barrier when the people in the institution are not familiar with the concept and therefore, don’t place much value on it.
Hello Emma
I don´t understand ¿predatory journal?
Hi De
Well the concept of predatory journals is complex but essentially they are journals that have no proper peer review, no real readers, and no library subscriptions and they aim to trick academics into publishing with them in order to make money. Because Open Access journals often also have APCs (Author Processing Charges) it can be hard to tell a low impact OA journal from a predatory journal. In addition, some Open Science advocates would say that all traditional publishing is too concerned with profit and not with enhancing research.
This gives a good overview: https://instr.iastate.libguides.com/predatory
The website https://thinkchecksubmit.org/ and https://www.rxcomms.com/blog/6-ways-spot-predatory-journal/ can help with spotting predatory journals
Hi Andrea
Yes this is where you can post questions for the whole MOOC. You can either just reply to this post or if you want to start a new discussion about a topic that is fine too.
The survey was created by our partners at CRECIM in Barcelona, I think this is a good point so I will feed it back to them directly.
Dear Andrea, that is an excellent point you are raising. We will deal with predatory publishing later in the lessons on Open Access. But to clarify the term I have created an entry in our MOOC Open Science Glossary where you can find information on the topic: Predatory Publishing.
Hi Emma
Just a hopefully quick couple of questions…
Thanks for your help,
Tammy Shadbolt
Dear Tammy,
thanks for reporting this bug. And no, you are not ridiculous at all! There was indeed a broken link to the wrong forum, but thanks to you we have fixed it now. You can start discussing now with your fellow peers!
Thanks again and sorry for the confusion,
Sabine
Hello,
I have completed all the course as soon as it was possible and I received a mail saying:
"All of you who completed all of the weekly modules and earned all six badges will be awared the ORION Open Science Champion Badge and receive a personalised Statement of Participation from the Open University within the coming days. We extended the deadline for completing the course until next Monday, March 30th".
I have been waiting to obtain that statement. But I can't find where it is. I have all the badges and I can access to it, but not tho the statement. Any help or clarification is greatly appreciated.
Dear Ivan Martin,
you are right, you have completed the course and are entitled to receive a Statement of Participation. However, these certificates are issued by the Open University so we as course managers cannot send you one directly. I have contacted the Open University and told them about your case and asked if they could (re)send your certificate. This process can take a few days. If you don't get your cerificate by next week, please contact us again and we try to figure out where the problem is and what to do.
Cheers,
Sabine from the MOOC team
Can I start this course on any day I choose? Or are these webinars from a course that has already finished, that I can peruse at my own pace? Thanks! Fieke
Welcome Fieke,
this MOOC is based on a live course that we held in February and March of this year. And yes, you can use the learning materials as individual self-paced course and start anytime you want. If you complete the individual lessons, you can earn digital badges for each module and get a Statement of Participation. However, many assignments require posting on the forum and since this MOOC is not live at the moment, you might not see much of a discussion there now. But many of the learning materials are interactive and informative on their own.
I hope you enjoy the course!
Cheers,
Sabine
Hi, I'm a newcomer of this course, in September 2020. Interesting to go through this.
