Activity 1.7: Reflect on your learning

Have you felt 'included' this week? If so, in what way. If not, why not?

Have you felt excluded?

I felt excluded when i tried to  sign in to this course and my internet went off. When the net was back, i was panicky and i could not see the sign in button. I posted that i could not find it in the TESSA ambassadors' wall. Oli guided me, i felt included. Inclusion and exclusion could go beyond special needs.

Well done for persevering Florence! I think we all need to be aware as we become more dependent on digital communication that it is easy for people to feel excluded. I certainly find that technology has moved fast and I have had very little training.

Reflect on my learning

Since the teaching and learning happen online, to be part of the group one needs to take part in the activities.

I think in time, we will start comment/reply to one another's answers and then we will even feel more part of the group.

You are right Marinda. Peer support , collaboration  and interactions help make learners feel included. As you have stated,  constant replies and comments to post by others in this course  make us have a sense of belonging and inclusivity in the course.

Nice to hear that Arrey. Feeling Included helps build ones self-esteem whereas being excluded results to frustration and desperation. Could there be someone you know who could be feeling excluded in this course? How would you support such person?

FLORENCE Kamonjo Post 28 in reply to 3

19 March 2021, 6:39 PM

Correct Arrah. Being able to access learning materials would make one feel included in the lesson. Therefore a teacher should avail learning resources to all the learners to make them feel included in the lesson or the course.

Yes, I felt included this week since I have been able to share my thoughts in this week's Forum. I feel this goes a long way to add to inclusiveness in online learning. When you share your thoughts and one or two other participants comment, you feel included. The Forum should be improved to allow commenting on learners' posts, also.

No, because sometimes we may end up being part of meetings or deliberations which normally are conducted in the local language and therefore the global medium of exchange is not utilised which obviously leads to detachments and lack of interest as well as lack of participation.

But in forums here yes felt included

That is good to hear! You raise a good point about language. In cultures where many languages are spoken, it is easy to make people feel excluded. We all need to be careful about this.

Reflection

I feel excluded. I’m trying my best to use this platform of learning. I read and post my answers but nobody is commenting on my post, so I don’t know if I am on the right track.  Maybe, when someone points me in the right direction – then I may feel included!

I felt included reading through the responses for example where people were excluded because of language. It made me feel that even though this was long time ago I was not alone. It gave me some sense of belonging. Our sharing also shows that everyone can be vulnerable at one given point .As Frederick Haga mentioned in the interview, no one should be left out because we are all human regardless of our vulnerabilities.

I have felt included this week. Being able to express times I have felt excluded and even my own thoughts on inclusive education have added to this. Being able to share this platform with other educators, knowing that my thoughts and feelings are accepted, makes me feel included.

Jenna-Louise Barkley Post 41 in reply to 1

Reflecting on my experience as a learner this week I think I can say I felt included. The activities asked for my own experiences with inclusion and exclusion, giving me the opportunity to express these in the forum. I was able to read of the experiences of others and even found those who had similar experiences to me.

This helps me as a teacher to put myself in the place of the learner, developing my empathy and my sense of responsibility to ensure all my students feel included and be aware of ways they may feel excluded.

The Wave 1 model of inclusion speaks about teachers using peer support for excluded learners and this course really does encourage that when we are able to express ourselves in the forum, read others' experiences and give and receive feedback. Also, as I am doing this course alongside my own colleagues, we are able to have these discussions and then use ideas to better the quality of our teaching practice.
