Activity 2.5: The justification for LCE as a policy choice

Which of the three justifications discussed do you think is the most convincing and why?

For me, the convincing justification is, the need for learners to develop ‘21st century skills’ for life in the ‘knowledge economy’. This is because it include attributes like critical thinking, independent research, and flexibility. These attributes are key in education and in moving the world to greater heights.

The most convincing to the least convincing and why.

1st Cognition Narrative. With diagnostic testing you can teach children from their grade level/ capabilities. Why? Teachers need to know where to bring students from what they already know and guide them to what they dont know in other words its expanding their knowledge on a certain topic.

2nd Emancipatory Narrative. Children control their own learning and is supported or guided by the teacher. Why? Once teacher know what are her students capabilities she can now plan a lesson based of their interest through differentiation.

3rd Preparation Narrative. Children can apply what they  learn in school to real life situation. Why? After all that has been taught throughout the school year they can use information taught for years to come.

For me, the most important justification is  the third: the need for learners to develop ‘21st century skills’ for life in the ‘knowledge economy’. This is so important because indeed education has witnessed a  transformation in the 21st century, digital technologies have  promoted such transformation and the learners have digital competencies, which is a very important 21st century skills. 21st century learners are increasingly having different characteristics from their teachers (they are called "Digital Natives" (Prensky, 2001). Hence LCE is very suitable here, because it will promote use of techniques that will be appropriate to these set of digital learners who have different characteristics from the traditional (previous set of) learners.

The most convincing one to me is the preparation narrative because it helps prepares the learner for the 21st century skills and it helps to prepare their thinking critically and  independently. These skills are very important in todays world which is why I find it most convincing.

For me the most convincing justification is  the preparation narrative. This is because, it focuses on  needs for learners to develop 21st C skills for life in the knowledge economy. The world is a global village and keeps transforming from time to time, hence need to equip learners with skills, knowledge and attitude that are relevant to the market demands.

The most important justification for LCE as a policy is the preparation narrative. This is because with the world fast moving into the digital economy, it helps the 21st century learners to develop more skills to meet up with the new trend.

In my opinion, and from a preschool teacher's perspective,  the cognition narrative is most convincing to me especially if the LCE policy is implemented from the foundational preschool years.

This narrative speaks about building on learners' interests and is activity-oriented to promote meaningful learning. At the preschool level, this is most beneficial to these young ones who are in a concrete stage of learning. Building on the Bronfrenbrenner theory that individuals learn from their own experiences and are influenced from within and then widens outward from family, to school, to community, country, etc.

So, by prioritizing the cognition narrative, then the preparation and finally the emancipatory narrative, the child will grow and learn the life skills, critical thinking, independence and social skills and attitudes needed for 21st century citizenship and further into the global village.
