Use this thread to tell us one thing that you will do differently in your role to be more inclusive.

One thing definitely is soliciting regular feedback to understand learners profiles better and with that designing curricula which is not only inclusive but using targeted inclusive teaching and learning strategies and appropriate interventions given the profile of the learners

Well put Rafia. We could add that inclusion is not just for special need cases but a teacher ought to move along with all learners in class. Rafia you could give an example of how you involve all of them in a different way from what you have been doing in the past.

I will try to be more observant and flexible in my teaching to accommodate the needs of all my learners and to make them feel valued. I  envisage to inculcate the same values to my teacher-trainees.

I'm also thinking  about creating a forum to sensitize my colleagues teacher educators  and  teachers within my reach on the need of flexibility in teaching strategies and attitudes to include all learners in the learning process in a normal classroom setup.

Sensitizing colleagues is a good point David. Many teachers and lecturers may be excluding learners because of lack of knowledge. Let every teacher be educated on inclusive teaching and learning.

Quite true Florence. Lack of awareness could be making majority teachers  use old teaching approaches and attitudes that exclude learners. There is need to enlighten them.

One thing I will like to do differently is in the area of formative assessment. This is to enable me know their strength and weaknesses so that I can attend to every of their needs to ensure that non is excluded.

You are right Sefinat. Formative assessment is key in helping the teacher  make observations on learners in order to  adjust his/her pedagogies to suit the learners' depending on their individual differences. Could you please share some of the things that would constitute your formative assessments?

One thing i will do to make my teaching more inclusive is that i will tend to be more observant, flexible in my teaching and will always reflect on my teaching. I will most importantly make my teaching inclusive to all. Also, i will inculcate the minimum criteria for LCE into my teaching.

FLORENCE Kamonjo Post 11 in reply to 6

Being more reflective is a good point Adamu. Reflection will enable continuous improvement on including very learner in the teaching process.

Mele Aleamotu'a Post 21 in reply to 11

12 March 2021, 8:11 AM

Yes Adam and Kamonjo  being more reflective is certainly very vital if we want our inclusive practises to be effective ,also we want the learning process of the child to progress and improve in a consistent manner

This course has helped us to ask questions to ourselves after a lesson

Did the leaner meet the learning outcome ?Where the tasks appropriate ?How did I know. Which tasks did not work well? why? Did I have the right resources or materials I needed?. The list of questions can go on and on

Therefore I agree with Reflection

Same case with me Azzez. Observation is a must if a teacher plans to be inclusive flowed by flexibility if any need is observed.

Definitely I agree as teachers we need to be observant and learn from each of our students. This will help us be able to find ideas for each student.

I totally agree we have to plan lesson to include all students needs. This is to have group work, interactive games. and especially motivate all students during the lesson as praising them.

Mele Aleamotu'a Post 20 in reply to 1

12 March 2021, 8:00 AM

The one thing I will definitively  do differently in my role to be more inclusive in my practise is Reflect on my practise at all times .I can plan and select the appropriate resource and observe the child needs but if I do not reflect on my practise I believe I will not be effective.

When I reflect  it will remind me what I did well and keep doing it and what I did not do  right I will have to change my approach by improving because we want to be more learner centre in  my practise. Regular reflection will support me in the development of my knowledge for practise ,my knowledge   of practise, and my knowledge in practise .

Reflecting on regular basis will help me select right resources or create resources that are available and free for the child's learning process. Moreover it will certainly make my practises more  effective by involving every student in my class. Reflection will make me to be more observant and flexible in my teaching practises to cater the needs of the learners and most importantly the children feel valued.

Good comment Taufa. It is good to reflect on a lesson and as questions with the aim of improving the delivery on content to the learner and being more inclusive.

I have learned thst I have everything within my reach to include and invlove all in my teaching. After this course , my attitude has changed. I will also make good use of OER's and TESSA materials and resources to improve my skills for professional development as well as make the experience of learning more useful to all. I will also share the same with my peers and collaborate with others.

Benedicta Tabot Post 29 in reply to 1

13 April 2021, 8:02 AM

This course has given me a wider view and understanding of inclusion i.e ensuring each student feels valued and ensuring each student is actively engaged in the larning process.  I also learned that every teacher can be inclusive even without specialised training but only needs to use leaner-centred approaches and locally available materials as well as explore the vast OERs that can be adapted according to one's context.

As an inclusive teacher, I  purpose to make my teaching more learner-centred by being more observant of learner behaviour and acting accordingly.  I would also engage students more actively and make use of OERs in my teaching.

Activity 4.7: Action planning for inclusive teaching and learning

This course made me reflect on my teaching strategies. I was able to analyze my weaknesses and strengths that I need to work on. I know that inclusive means include all students in your class. Involve them and learn from each one. I need to be more observant.

As a teacher I would have more engaged activities. Plan a strategy where they can work as a group. I have to give clear instructions for all students.

Not forgetting to create a safe and welcoming learning environment to have all students feel comfortable in my class.

But most important is to appreciate each and every individual in my class and respect their differences and their way of learning.

For me to be to be able to include all my learners, I will be an observant and flexible teacher. I will also make all my learners feel valued and cared for, thus raising their self esteem. This course has really changed my attitude!

Doing both these courses : Inclusive Teaching and Learning and Creating Inclusive Schools has renewed my responsibility as a teacher to ALL my students. I previously felt frustration that because I was not specifically trained in Special Education and that I have experienced faults in the support system that inclusion was a difficult thing. But these courses have given me hope and confidence that I can do whatever I can to try to meet the needs of all my learners. I have been able to take away some valuable tools and specific strategies that I can use within my classroom and this is what I felt was lacking in my skill set.

I am inspired after having done these courses and I will use my notebooks in the future and the resources I was able to download. I will definitely continue collaborating with my colleagues and doing ongoing reflection on my practice to ensure that it is learner-centred and inclusive.
