From the Key Resources, I  read on the section on " Specific teaching approaches"  which included the right way of Questioning, Assessing students' abilities, Assigning learners to groups or pair as well as Differentiating the learning tasks by offering them a variety of activities.

In my teaching context, I will differentiate tasks for learners according to their abilities to make sure all are involved.

Key Resources

My pick is on Differentiation of Learning.

This involves giving a variety of tasks and activities which accounts for individual learning needs of the learner there by making learning active and inclusive. Therefore teaching should revolve around activities and tasks according to individual needs.

In my teaching I will give task such as research in an area and make class presentations. Learners can record their presentations and post on Learning management system which will cater for the shy students. Presenting written work would also be used to include those good in writing and also help those weak in this area learn more.

That is a great point, Florence. By setting open-ended tasks, with an element of choice, learners find their own level - and can be inspired by each other. Often in these circumstances, students who lack confidence, do really well. This is sometimes called 'differentiation by outcome' and what David describes is 'differentiation by task'. Both are great strategies, but which one works best depends on the task, the learners, the learning outcomes etc. etc. That is the skill of the teacher: selecting the right approach at the right time!

This strategy can also help build the child's self esteem and he/she will feel more confident and good about him/ herself.

From the key resources, I chose Assessment, this is because it helps me to develop a wide range of technique for formative assessment that will enable me to know each students strength and weakness, their hidden talents and shortfalls so as to be in a better position to respond to the students' individual needs.

The key resources i chose is using questioning to promote teaching.

This involves asking the students questions to boost their teaching. one thing i like with this is that it encourages the students to read and read more so as to be able to answer questions in class. Also, i like the way the questioning is been carried out in the sense that it will do away with the idea of some set of students always been the ones responding to questions in class. The teacher should make sure all students are involved. Another thing is the way and manner the questions are been asked which helps the students to achieve more skills like the prompting and probing.

From the key resources, I chose Assessment because it is one of the things that will help learners to pay attention to what I will be teaching.  The questions can be asked either from Lower order or from Higher order to enable the students either to recall or to think critically for responses.  Questioning techniques can also be used to asses how much the learners know about the topic to be taught or how they can use the knowledge acquired in their everyday life.  Questioning can also be used by learners for research purposes to find out more about the given topic.

FLORENCE Kamonjo Post 23 in reply to 12

Yes Matthew. Formative assessment is important with drawing and sustaining learners attention during a lesson. This is especially when questions are open-ended and thought provoking.

The key resources I chose is Questioning, Assessing students abilities, assigning learners to group or pair as well as differentiating the learning tasks by offering them various activities.

This involves asking the students questions, to give them a better understanding and to know their learning needs. In my context, differentiating their learning tasks will also help to give a kind of formative assessment of each learner to enable them know their strength and weaknesses.

My pick is on using pair work. Pair work is something i really appreciate as fostering learner-centered education especially in large classes. it promotes inclusive learning by allowing the students to work together and share ideas for more understanding.

FLORENCE Kamonjo Post 10 in reply to 7

9 March 2021, 4:57 AM

Well said Sule. Pair work is good but sometimes noisy. How do you ensure the class doesn't become too noisy?

PHENNY Oketch Post 8 in reply to 1

7 March 2021, 7:57 PM

The key resource I chose is group work. Being a science teacher, experiments are best done in groups of five.  With group work students are given instructions and the teacher can easily monitor the outcome of the various experiments. The students are given an opportunity to present their results to the class and this gives room for discussion of the results hence students come up with concrete analysis and conclusions.

Its true Phenny that group work can be an effective method that motivate students, encourage active learning, and develop key critical-thinking, communication, and decision-making skills. When using groups of more than two, how would you ensure that each member of the group plays a role in the task given?

FLORENCE KISIRKOI Post 11 in reply to 9

9 March 2021, 4:14 PM

Your question David sets us thinking. How to involve each member in a group of more than two members can be very tricky, unless one sets clear tasks for individuals in the group and clear  responsibilities for each member.. With pair work i have succeeded to involve everybody regardless the class size

Velma Russell Post 27 in reply to 11

Florence I agree with you. When each group member is assigned a task with clear responsibility they will be able to work effectively to complete the assigned task.

It also helps to develop their problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Key resource

I agree that group work is valuable but as indicated in WEEK 3.  The teacher needs to be well prepared and the teaching and learning needs to be well planned and structured. Learner s get an opportunity to be challenged with "other" ways of thinking by interaction with divers learners and thinking.

Matelita Taufa Post 20 in reply to 14

yes your are right that group work should be  well planned and structured to ensure all children are included and will participate effectively.

I selected Monitoring and Giving Feedback because it is a sure way of ascertaining learners progress and passing on information to a learner about how they performed in relation to stated goals.

I learned some of the techniques used in monitoring and giving effective feedback for learners such as observation, discussion and scrutiny of reading work and documents.

In an English class I will give a comprehension passage to a group of learners, give a written work, mark constructively and give feedback to learners for further improvements.

I pick Specific teaching Approaches.

I choose Differentiation and group work and pair work.

We have been reminded and saw couple of inclusive teaching practises were pair work or group is encouraged. Children learn and engage faster with their peers. Also providing the appropriate and right task for each groups helps the students to learn and share faster and their progress is successful.

In my teaching context I would certainly use  different task  for different groups because it will making the learning process more easier   and in their small groups they can freely express themselves amongst their peers. I would roam around and assist the small groups and make sure that no one is excluded but ALL included .As a teacher you would have to be flexible and always select the right approach at the right time if you keep reflecting on your practises.

David Ngatia Post 18 in reply to 16

You are right Mele. Differentiating of tasks and grouping ensures all learners are active and engaged in the learning process.

FLORENCE Kamonjo Post 24 in reply to 16

19 March 2021, 7:16 PM

Yes Mele. The group and pair work promotes active learning as learners engage with each other. This helps to have everyone on board excluding on-one.

Key Resources that I choose

1. Build Variety into your teaching- I selected this because as teachers we need to consider that children learn in different ways . Additional teaching should be geared towards how children learn, some children learn best when they work in pairs or in groups, some are good listeners, some are good writers, and to remember there are shy children in the classroom and not ask them questions during whole class discussion, but in a small group.

4.4 Key Resources

I agree students learn in different ways. As teachers we are observers and we keep learning from each of them to find out what best helps them to understand a concept. It is very essential to find their learning styles.

Laurette Osaso Post 21 in reply to 1

My pick would be use of positive language. At times as teachers we face challenges which students present. For example a student can be talking even when you are explaining something important to the rest of the class. I would interogate the student by asking them 'if they have something to share with the rest of the class regarding the lesson that we are learning' or create an emphasis that I will give some time for him/her to share with us his/her thoughts on the topic.

I agree Laurette. we teachers are faced with a challenge of using good language. Using good language, I  have learnt to correct the behaviour and not the learner.

I will use inclusive teaching through the use of technology.

This is the use of assistive technologies and devices or services that increase learners independence, participation and promote an inclusive environment that accomodates all.

Key resource 3: Talk for learning

I learnt in this section that allowing students to talk helps them to make connections with their prior experiences thus helps them to develop critical thinking especially when the teacher uses probing questions or giving them tasks in pairs or groups

I can use this idea in teacher education when teaching a skill in micro teaching for example after watching a video on a skill, they can talk about the strengths and weaknesses and why they think so.

I selected "Relate the work to everyday life." it speaks about relating what the students learn to their experiences. I believe that students will be given a chance to share their experiences in class. it show them how important the topic is to their everyday live. It may also motivate them to learn more.

Activity 4.4 Key Resources

From Key Resource 2- Approaches You Can Use All the Time

It came to mind the learning environment we need to prepare during this pandemic. We are at school and having our students in shifts for morning and afternoon session. We need to follow protocols and have our students safe. It is very essential to keep up with a safe environment for our students. Teaching them routines and reminding them of being safe from the virus is part of our teaching.

some of the ideas is to paint lines around their areas  for them to adopt the 6ft distance. A bag with  their own materials ready for them to use to do activities or have games for them to play after a lesson. Project videos with songs they like and games they would play. Interactive games using recycle materials as counters, as flash cards can help them to keep in their areas.

I am thankful that I am taking this course it is helping me to get ideas and add to our teaching strategies during this pandemic.

Thank you

I have selected the section on “Using Questioning to Promote Thinking”. I choose this because it allows and encourages student to think critically. Having read the chapter I learned that giving student’s ample time to think before answering increases the length of students’ responses, it increases the number of students offering responses, it allows for positive interactions between students and increase the number of students willing to volunteer an answer. In a language arts class while doing poems questions will be asked for students to give their interpretation or understanding of what certain parts of the poem relates to.

I have picked Key Resource #10: Storytelling, Songs, Role Play and Drama. I have learned that this Resource is a good tool to encourage social interaction, self-expression, exploration of values, and a way to approach certain life problems.

The use of this resource in my own setting (ECCE) is extremely valuable as young children respond very well to stories, rhymes/songs, fingerplays and roleplay situations. Children at this age and stage have big imaginations and a sense of the 'pretend', so it stands to reason that teachers can use it as a resource in their instructions across the curriculum.
