Activity 2.1 Education Policy

What are governments priorities for Education?

The priorities of Nigeria government for education is clearly spelt out in the 1977 National policy on education which identified the right of disabled children to education though, it did not specify the type of education they are to receive. The fourth edition of the National policy on education 2004 and the associated Universal Basic Education Act of 2004 calls for inclusive education, free education for people with special needs. other Policies that will ensure inclusiveness are National Policy on Gender in Basic education (2006), Policy to address nomadic education has been adopted and also policy to support education for girls and those affected by poverty.

What does the government do to ensure that the system is inclusive?

The President signed into Law the "Discrimination Against persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act in 2019. At present no implementation mechanism

What is the Impact of these policies and what else do you think they could do?

It led to increase in enrollment. Parents and families need to be involved for the success of inclusive education.
