Catherine and Sharn, I agree with you both that Kevin was not challenged enough. While reading this case study, i can recall a young man i met in my school. I never taught him but knew him very well because i work at a small school located in a small close knit fishing community. All students and staff knows everyone. Now this young man was highly intelligent, all teachers recognised this and did everything to support his learning. He was a true leader he took on roles without even being assigned and the teachers were delighted by his input . He was our school representative when resource personnels visited our school. He was told constantly about his ability to reason well. He was a fairly good student academically, However, he had family issues, where his mom a single young mother didnt focus on him much. We had several talk with her outlining his capabilities but becuse she had no dreams for him he did not feel accountable to no one since it was neither here nor there for his mom.
The staff encouraged him as best as we could , he did well in his exit exams and went on to high school , he later dropped out, its been over 5 years, he is 19 now still not back in school.
He works in the community doing odd jobs such as fishing and washing boat engines.
Fortunate for him, he is still alive. We hope one day someone will be able to reach him any suggestions?
